Tyre Profile

  • The car comes with 165/80 R14 tyres mounted on 14-inch steel wheels.

Tata Punch CNG Negatives After 1 Year & 19,000 KM – Real Ownership Review

If you're planning to buy the Tata Punch, especially the Adventure iCNG variant, then you must read this detailed blog before making your decision. After driving it for over 19,000 KM in a year, I’ve experienced both the highs and the lows.

In this post, I’ll be sharing the real-life negatives of the Tata Punch CNG that every buyer must know.

1. Engine: 3-Cylinder Drawback

Tata Punch comes with a 1.2L 3-cylinder engine. While it’s good enough for daily city driving, the engine noise is noticeably higher compared to a 4-cylinder engine. Especially when the AC is on or you’re accelerating, the cabin feels a bit noisy.

Note: If you're used to 4-cylinder engines or prioritize engine refinement, you might not enjoy this aspect.

2. Poor Door Lock Mechanism

One of the most frustrating parts of the Punch is its confusing door locking system.

Even if you lock the car from the driver’s side, the rear passenger can still open the door from inside. Unless you manually enable the child lock on both rear doors, it's a potential safety issue—especially if kids are seated in the back.

Safety Tip: Always activate the child lock from both sides if you often travel with children.

3. Weak Headlight Performance

In lower variants like Adventure iCNG, Tata provides halogen reflector headlights instead of LED or projector setups. The result?

  • Poor visibility at night

  • Low confidence while driving on highways or during rain

Suggestion: Install aftermarket LED headlights for better visibility and safety.

4. Underwhelming Pickup in CNG Mode

When driving in CNG mode, the initial pickup is noticeably slow. You’ll feel the lag especially:

  • While overtaking on highways

  • On steep inclines with passengers

Although switching to petrol mode improves the response, CNG mode remains sluggish for aggressive drivers.

Tip: Downshift before overtaking if you’re driving in CNG mode.

5. Not Meant for Aggressive Driving

The Tata Punch is designed for calm, efficient city driving. If you love quick acceleration, high-speed highway runs, or spirited driving, this may not be the right car for you.

Personal Note: I drive with a light foot and mostly within the city, so these limitations don’t bother me much. But if you expect SUV-like performance, be aware of this.

Final Verdict

Tata Punch CNG is a solid choice for daily commuting. It offers great mileage, rugged build quality, and Tata’s reliability. However, it's not perfect. If you value refinement, performance, and features like modern headlights or perfect locking safety, consider these negatives before purchasing.

Only Positives – Tata Punch Kyu Hai Itni Popular?

Tata Punch is everywhere — on city roads, highways, even village streets! But what makes it so loved by everyone? In this blog, I’m sharing only the positives from my real ownership experience after driving the Tata Punch for more than 18,000 kilometers. If you're planning to buy it or just curious, this post is for you!

1. Build Quality That Feels Premium

From the moment you shut the door, you’ll feel how solid the car is. It’s not just a feeling, though — Punch has earned a 5-star Global NCAP safety rating. Whether you're driving in city traffic or on the highway, that safety and confidence are always there with you.

2. Ground Clearance That Can Handle Indian Roads

Speed breakers, potholes, uneven roads — Punch handles it all without a fuss. Thanks to its 187mm ground clearance, you never have to slow down too much or worry about scraping the bottom.

3. High Seating = Better Confidence

The high driving seat gives you a clear and commanding view of the road. This is especially helpful in traffic and on narrow streets. You'll love this feature if you’re a new driver or on the shorter side.

4. Bold Looks and SUV-Style Road Presence

For a small SUV, Punch looks big and bold. Its design makes it stand out, whether you’re parked at a mall or cruising through the city. Colors like Tornado Blue and Daytona Grey add even more personality!

5. Surprisingly Spacious Interior

Don’t let its size fool you — Tata Punch is quite spacious inside. Both front and rear passengers get ample legroom and headroom. Even tall friends won’t complain on long drives.

6. Practical Boot Space for Daily Use

Need space for weekend bags, groceries, or even college luggage? The 366-litre boot handles it all. For a car this compact, it’s super practical.

7. Perfect for City Driving

Light steering, smooth clutch, and easy gear shifts — Punch is made for daily city driving. You can easily manage bumper-to-bumper traffic and narrow lanes without stress.

8. Great Mileage with the CNG Option

If you go for the CNG variant, your running cost goes way down. In real-world conditions, you can get up to 30 km/kg on highways. That’s serious savings every month!

9. Loaded with Features in Mid Variants

Even if you skip the top model, you still get features like a 7-inch touchscreen, reverse camera, auto climate control, and more. Tata really nailed the balance of price and features here.

10. Hassle-Free Ownership Experience

Servicing the Punch is simple and affordable. Parts are easily available and Tata’s service network is growing. Overall, the experience of owning a Tata car has really improved in recent years.

Final Thoughts

Tata Punch is more than just a city car — it’s a complete package. Whether it’s the strong build, spacious interior, smooth driving, or fuel efficiency, it checks all the right boxes. No wonder it’s one of the top-selling cars in India right now!

If you’re planning to get one, I’d say go for it — you won’t regret it.

Tata Punch CNG City Mileage Test – Real-World Tank-to-Tank Analysis

If you're wondering how much mileage Tata Punch CNG offers in city driving, you're in the right place! In this blog, I’ve documented a real-world tank-to-tank mileage test conducted in typical city conditions of Firozabad.

Why This Test?

Although I’ve driven the Punch CNG multiple times in the city and on highways, I never officially recorded the city mileage. Today, I decided to check the actual city mileage using a tank-to-tank method. The aim was to understand how the car performs in real-world city traffic.

Starting the Test

The CNG was already almost full, but since the car had run around 16.7 km, I decided to top it up completely at a company-operated CNG pump in Firozabad. Surprisingly, only 2 kg CNG was filled, which indicates the tank was nearly full already.

Trip meter reset: 0.0 km
Weather: Rainy and pleasant
AC status: ON at 1st level
Traffic conditions: Mild to moderate city traffic

Drive Details

I covered daily errands and drove only within city limits. The trip meter gradually climbed and I noticed something interesting:

  • First 19 km – No drop in fuel bars, which was impressive.

  • The car drove through real city roads — signals, light traffic, and occasional stops.

  • By the end of the test, the trip meter showed 30.9 km before I returned to the same pump for a refill.

Refill Details & Calculation

At the same CNG pump, I again topped up the tank. Here’s what the final stats looked like:

Distance Driven: 31 km
CNG Refilled: 1.3 kg
Cost: ₹122
Mileage:

31 km1.3 kg23.8 km/kg\frac{31 \text{ km}}{1.3 \text{ kg}} \approx \textbf{23.8 km/kg}

So yes, in city traffic, the Tata Punch CNG gave an impressive mileage of around 24 km/kg, which is pretty efficient for an SUV-style hatchback.

Driving Experience in the City

Even after 18,000+ km of driving, I find the Punch CNG:

  • Comfortable to drive

  • Gives an SUV-like view with a visible bonnet

  • Has smooth gear shifts and handling, especially in low gears

  • Feels solid and confident even in traffic

Despite being a compact SUV, you don’t feel the stress of driving a “big” car in city lanes.

Final Verdict

If you’re planning to buy a Tata Punch CNG or already own one, you can expect a realistic city mileage between 22–25 km/kg, depending on AC usage and traffic. It performs better than expected, even in stop-and-go traffic.
